Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition Congress party, was detained by police during a protest in New Delhi. The protest targeted the country’s election chief, following a controversial revision of voter lists. Gandhi and other lawmakers were stopped as they marched toward Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site. A live stream from his party’s YouTube channel showed police taking him into a vehicle.
Delhi police registered a First Information Report against Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other party workers. The FIR alleges they assaulted police personnel and obstructed government work during the protest. The protest involved leaders from the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties. Ninety-one people were detained in the incident.
This follows a broader campaign by opposition parties to challenge the revised voter list, which they claim disenfranchises millions. The protest was part of a larger effort to pressure the election authority. Gandhi’s arrest highlights the tensions between opposition leaders and law enforcement during public demonstrations. The situation underscores the ongoing political conflict over electoral reforms in India.
